Scaling MEC Technology: The METREAU Journey

We're proud to be a core partner in METREAU, a £1.6 million Ofwat-funded project that brings Microbial Electrolysis Cell (MEC) technology one step closer to commercial deployment.

Led by Northumbrian Water with partners including Yorkshire Water, Thames Water, Irish Water, Newcastle University, and Isle Utilities, METREAU will deliver a mobile pilot unit designed to help water utilities reduce energy consumption, boost capacity, cut emissions, and recover valuable resources from wastewater.

This project marks a major milestone — accelerating our journey from university spin-out to commercial deployment and helping the water industry adopt low-energy, circular, and scalable treatment technologies.
